Local Attorney Honored

By: Kraig Sexton, special writer, The Express Week of April 1, 2001

Who says good deeds go unrecognized?

One local attorney, with a reputation for putting up a big fight for the little guy was recently recognized for his work. James Fett, from the Pinckney law firm Fett & Linderman, was awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in for his "dedication in the protection of civil and human rights of citizens, regardless of their ethnic origin or socio-economic background."

Fett, who in 1996 was named the Attorney of the Year by the Washtenaw Trial Lawyers Association and in 2000 was chosen to be among the Top 10 Lawyers of the Year by Michigan Lawyers Weekly, has long risen to the challenge of the common man wronged.

"I think I've always liked representing the underdog and the law has given me the opportunity to do that," said Fett.

A 1986 graduate of the Masters of Business of Administration programs. Fett has long made a name for himself fighting for employee rights.

"I fight discrimination in all forms," he said.

Whether battling against the harassment of a minority worker, as he did with a suit against the Ingham County Road commission; crusading in opposition of sexual harassment with a case against the city of Ann Arbor, which, in 1995, landed Fett on Court TV; or taking on discrimination as he did with his representation of a Michigan State Police trooper; Fett doesn't shy away from a sizable opponent.

"I'm a mercenary for justice," laughed Fett, who recently filed a large class action suit against Ford Motor Company, alleging that diversity targets have denied some white employees deserved promotions.

When not litigating, Fett, a Putnam Township resident, enjoys boating, reading and weightlifting.
